Timbres of Heaven Soundfont 2.0.2

Hi all,

I just wanted to point out to people this excellent sound font because I feel It deserves to be mentioned here. In my experience, it is very well balanced and put together. It is GM, GS and XG compatible and includes quite a few sound effects. In my opinion it is an excellent general purpose soundfont and I already replaced my system's default Sound Canvas set with it (Personally I think it stomps the FluidR3_GM set). It's a 250mb download (319.6mb uncompressed) which makes it a little large to be incorporated into the base install. But it definitely should be mentioned on the website. Also, make sure it's that full size when downloaded, as I have heard some difficulties when downloading from it's site.

Improving the sound output of MuseScore: what is missing

Hi. I have been testing several days Musescore, 1 and 2, and, like has said in the other section in the forum, it`s very nice for score editing.
But i have been looking in the sound output/midi performance, and i see it`s very poor.
I guess that the point of the "Soundfont" section of the forum is because you want to improve the output of your Score. BUT, the realism in the sound is not only a better soundfont. In the case of wind or bowed instruments, you need to control the sound of the samples in the time, like a "crescendo". But i see that Musescore dont support any midi CC, even the "expression" one, or the "volume" other. Only statics notes (maybe im missing something i dont know)
I exported a midi file made with a sequencer, I loaded it with Musescore, re-save (without modifications) the same file to midi, and re-opened with the sequencer. All the information about crescendos, Pitch-bend, etc was lost. And that data is what makes the performance of your score more "real".
What you need, much more than a better soundfont, is a better management of midi CCs.
Would like to see that Musescore include them in the data imported, and better, that allow you to edit them.
That, i asure you, will make the day&night difference in your playback realism, even with small soundfonts.
Would like to hear your opinions,

BR

8-Bits soundfont add

So I had been thinking the last few days while working on my compositions, how cool it would be to create some good old 8-bits music. I think it would be a nice add to the already amazing experience I have with musescore. I don't know if it already exist somewhere on the net, but if so I didn't found it yet so i'll propose it there as I did on your facebook page (that told me to say it there). Thx!

2.0 Beta and playback

I've tested the nightlies earlier and the sound has worked better than in the stable 1.3 version, when it comes to sound quality. Now when I tested the 2.0 Beta version, it seemed to have the same good quality as in the nightlies, but it was almost impossible to get a decent playback without stuttering, if I had three or more instruments. Saving a wav seemed to work, but real time playback didn't. Do we need some super fast cutting edge computers to get the playback to work with the 2.0 Beta?

two questions about making soundfonts

Hi --

Two questions about making soundfonts.

1. If I like the saxophone sound from soundfont #1 and the trumpet sound from soundfont #2 and the harp sound from soundfont #3, is there some way I can copy and paste, to kludge my own soundfont?

2. What software do I need, to make my own soundfont?

Thank you!

Hi there, I was thinking that the major part of users of musescore can't take better soundfonts. I want share and counsel you very good soundfonts:
First is Arachno soundfont, which has a library of all instruments: https://www.sendspace.com/file/4tki2c
Second, for piano, is Stein Grand Piano soundfont(counseled by pianist1998): http://www.freedrumkits.net/sound-fonts/pianos/857-stein-grand-piano-sou...
For stronger piano sound: Steinway Grand piano(always counseled by pianist1998):
http://www.freedrumkits.net/sound-fonts/packs/820-steinway-soundbank-sou...
Another very good piano soundfont is Steinway grand piano, but is for pay(always counseled by pianist1998):
https://www.soundfontdownloads.com/node/33
A very good String quartet soundfont is this (click on "040 Florestan String quartet"):

And, for last one, a great orchestra soundfont ,with all instrument library:

I hope you like these soundfonts!

Sonatina Symphonic soundfont doesn't match the instruments on MuseScore

The only instrument that sounds the same in Sonatina Symphonic soundfont is piano, but I'd like to have other instruments as well (violins etc.) Most of the instruments don't produce any sounds and some of them produce completely different sounds, such as solo violin makes a drum sound. What to do?

Edit:
I'm using MuseScore 1.3 on Windows Vista.

Working with vocal sounds

Hello -- I am brand new to MuseScore and have started experimenting with the choral template.
I have edited staff properties (staff label) from S-A-T-B to S1-S2-A1-A2 for a women's choir arrangement. I've started with the A1 line. Using MIDI input, the notation appears an octave higher than it should be, so I use CTRL-down arrow to correct that. However, the A1 line continues to sound like tenor/bari voices. For that same part, I've also attempted to "change instrument" as well....some instruments produce no sound at all, others a distorted sound, and if I choose "soprano" the sound seems to be transposed somehow.
How can I get the former "tenor" line to sound like an alto voice?
Please forgive my "newbie" ignorance...any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Metal Voice?

Hey everybody! I have been using Musescore to write a bunch of metal songs, and I've been having to make do using gunshot sounds or the alfred hitchcock scream sound for the voice. Needless to say, neither are very satisfactory.

Does anyone know of a good deathmetal scream soundfont? I can find great guitar soundfonts but nothing for the voice (which is often the most interesting and important part, and the music does not sound correct without it).

If nobody knows of one, I'll try to make one myself, but I'll have to wait until I'm the only one home so I don't disturb anyone with the noise! Or maybe someone could offer to give me samples?

Changing soundfont in 2.0

Downloaded 'ProTrax_Classical_Guitar.sf2 from the HammerSound library and installed it in the MuseScore2 soundfont folder: 'Program Files (x86)> MuseScore2> sound'.
Then after viewing the synthesizer nothing was there.
But clicking of the 'Add' button and selecting it this new soundfont appeared.
For testing I selected it and made it the default font.
When playing I discovered that nothing had changed. I am hearing still the 'FluidR3Mono_GM.sf3' soundfont.
Can someone help me getting things right please?
Thanks.

Fluid.sf3 liscence

I mysteriously acquired a copy of some form of fluidr3.sf2, and was under the impression it had a proprietary license. What is the license of the new fluid.sf3 default soundfont, and who or what created it? I have a feeling this information is hiding around this site somewhere, but its been quite evasive.

Soundfont for 2.0

There have been some concerns with FluidR3 for the 2.0 release - pops caused by some bad interaction with the sf3 version and libsndfile, other artifacts in muted trumpet and tuba sounds, lower overall volume level, balancing issues, short notes sounding too quiet for some instruments (eg, violin) because of the slow attack, maybe others I've forgotten.

Much as I like FluidR3 overall, I'm certainly sensitive to these concerns. But it's not clear to me how much control we have over some of this. And it seems that if any significant effort is going to go into soundfont tweaking for 2.0, we should start really getting a handle on what is going to be involved. There has been some discussion of these issues, and even some PR's submitted for of this, but I want to make sure we are covering all the bases we need to cover. Hence this thread.

FWIW, I periodically download various other free GM soundfonts to compare with FluidR3 to see if there is anything else we should be considering. So far, I still haven't found one that I think is better in enough respects to be worth considering shipping instead. I *will* say that Timbres of Heaven shows the most promise of anything I've heard. It sounds quite good overall, and I'm guessing it uses normalized samples, as it comes off as noticeably louder than FluidR3 for the same Mixer settings. it has at least as many balance issues that would need correcting, and the slow attacks are even more problematic than in FluidR3 in terms of making short notes too quiet. Unfortunately, the slow attack in these two soundfonts is an important part what makes them so attractive otherwise - it means things can sound reasonably legato by default That's the Achilles heel of so many other soundfonts in an environment where we don't have a way to suppress attacks for legato passages. But perhaps some sort of compromise could be found. Also, the license for Timbres of Heaven is too restrictive, although that might be negotiable if we thought fixing the issues with Timbres of Heaven was a better way to go than fixing the issues with Fluid3.

And I'm still curious about other alternatives. Three that come up pretty often I personally think would *not* be options for us. GeneralUserGS sounds fine for its size, but is pretty weak on most wind intruments (weak in the sense of artificial-sounding, not balance). Similar for Arachno, plus it really is pretty bad in overall balance for the scores I have tried it with. Sonatina Symphonic is not even close to GM compatible.

Better Sounds for "TamTam""Peitsche" or "Bass Drum"

Hi, first I want to praise your new Sounds for Percussion and Drums, they are really nice than those in Version 1.3.
Unfortunately there are two Instruments, that dont own the right Sound:
The "Tam-Tam" and the "Peitsche", or in English language the "Whip", I think.
The "Tam-Tam" sounds like a China Cymbal that is often used in modern music. This doesnt sound similar to the sound of a 80' TamTam, because a big TamTam has got a very heavy and powerful sound, wheres you should difference between big TamTams and small ones. The art of the sound varies with the size of the TamTam. This video should show how a TamTam or Gong can sound :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gab8TUatnEI

The "Whip" sounds more like a woodblock. This sound has got nothing in common with the sound of a whip.

What is realy pity is that the Bass Drum just has got a short and curbed sound. This sound is right if you are use it for military Marches ore something else, but there are pieces that are using a big sound that is not curbed. This video should show the posibilitys of a Gran Cassa (watch 1.49):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwq72FXZ5SA
Pieces like Rebonds, composed by Iannis Xenakis are showing this, too.

Despite all that there are a lot of improvements in Musescore 2.0 beta in the compare to Musescore 1.3.

Regards

Edit: same mistake at "Rahmentrommel", "Fingeerbecken", "Glocken", "Glockenstab", "Glockenplatte", "Klangschale", "Tubo", "Metall-Kastangnetten", "Ambos", "Kastangetten", "Donnerblech", "Holz-Windspiel", "Bambus-Windspiel", "Metall-Windspiel", "Glas-Windspiel", "Muschel-Windspiel", "Tuned Gong", "Bass Drums", "Becken". The last two instruments do not have any sounds and are from the category Marching. And please make the "Becken" from ungestimmtes Schlagwerk more powerfull, brighter and stronger, maybe something that produces morer the sound of A due Cymbels.

Problems with soundfonts in Musescore 2.0 (Revision: 1efc609, Mac OSX 10.9.4)

Hi,

First, this is a much better software than 1.3 - I found that a lot of the durations not adding up in 1.3 have been fixed automatically when opening the old scores.

I did run into a few issues however.
1. Selecting multiple soundfonts seems to be broken for me. It's doing something, but definitely not what I want. As an example adding a guitar soundfont with 3 instrument inside and an accordion soundfont with 5 instruments - between the mixer and the player they get confused. Selecting any guitar plays ok, however selecting the 4th entry would still play the guitar #1 where that is 100% an accordion. The logic seems off, counting the first instrument twice - it plays:
1. Guitar #1 plays ok
2. Guitar #2 plays ok
3. Guitar #3 plays ok
4. Accordion #1 - plays Guitar #1
5. Accordion #2 - plays Guitar #2
6. Accordion #3 - plays Guitar #3
7. Accordion #4 - plays Accordion #1
8. Accordion #5 - plays Accordion #2

So there's no way to play Accordions #3, #4, #5.

Trying to change the order of sf instruments in the synth dialog crashed the app a few times, once I tried to get back to the mixer.

2. Everything is exported in the default piano - even though I've removed it and added new soundfonts. The playback is fine inside Musescore but the exported wav is not.

3. The rendering seemed to sometimes flicker/"jump", oscillating between no space between rows to huge spaces.

I realize this is probably due to the new feature (drag'n'drop the rows) but would it be possible to lock/unlock it?

Thank you,
Sebastian

Soundfonts When Uploading?

So I am working on a piece and currently using the Fluid soundfont. When I upload the piece however, it goes back to it's cartoony, Musescore-y sound. Which is fine, I guess. Doesn't sound too bad-ish.

I was just curious as to whether or not there's a way to upload the soundfont with the piece or is the soundfont only for when you're working on the piece and Musescore.com itself uses the same basic soundfont for all the pieces on it?

Hi. I have a problem, because the sound font FluidR3Mono_GM doesn't sound very good. I found a different one I like much more, but I don't know how to change it. I can't give further information then that, seeing as how I'm in a huge hurry. Any questions ask me in the forums.

THANK YOU!!!

Best Soundfont Forum

I'm looking for the best general soundfont forum on the internet. I REALLY want to learn the secrets to making good soundfonts.

I made one for my private use that was quite pitiful.

The tutorial I found on YouTube is too rudimentary.

I dowloaded one or two fonts from the internet with some annoying clicks in the waveform to which I would like to attempt repair.

The only soundfont program I have is the free Viena (one 'n').

Especially, I want to learn how they created the ProTrax guitar font that makes a fret noise when you lift your finger from the keyboard. I've studied this font and I can't figure out how they achieved that effect.

Sounfont not sounding

So today I was looking on bedroom producers blog and found a list of soundfonts. I downloaded the first one I saw (piano 162) and on the website it sounded absolutely amazing. After I downloaded, I put it in to the folder you put sound fonts in (I've forgotten the name of it). Here are all of the important things:

•It's an SFZ
•It's in zerberus
•It's selected in the mixer
•My volume is up
•Dynamic is ƒ

When I play it, it just doesn't make any sound.

Here are some screenshots: Screen Shot 2014-11-15 at 9.25.41 PM.pngScreen Shot 2014-11-15 at 9.25.18 PM.png

Anyones help is extremely appreciated!
