Plucked Strings Font

$

Folks I'd like some feedback on whether this is worth pursuing or not. I've been experimenting with a dedicated soundfont for plucked strings: my focus is on mandolin family instruments because that's what I play, but there's some guitars sampled as well. Here's some test renderings (all dry with no effects):

Fingerstyle acoustic steel string guitar.

Plectrum acoustic steel string guitar.

Ensemble mandolin piece (2 mandolins, mandola, and Octave Mandolin).

The soundfont itself is in my dropbox (caution: very large file!!)

If you examine the font you'll see that the guitars have two presets each: one of these has a "_h" suffix and is a humanized version: each note has had a random amount of delay and volume attenuation added. This is of course a poor substitute for a real humanization program, and the effect is quite subtle, but my gut feeling is that it makes a difference on chords or where there are multiple instruments as the notes don't all sound exactly together. It's a bit of an experiment so I'd welcome feedback.

It's also worth noting, that while tremolo is an essential part of mandolin technique, tremolo rendered with these fonts is so excruciatingly awful that there are no examples presented above (it sounds like a machine gun going off in case you're wondering). I've tried a number of workarounds including sampling actual tremolo, but I don't have anything I'm happy with yet. If anyone has any better ideas I'm all ears.

Anyhow let me know what you think: good bad or indifferent!

Wind chimes don't sound

In Musescore 1.3 with the FluidR3_M.sf2 sound font loaded, the Bamboo/Metal/Wooden/Glass Wind Chimes percussion instruments all just sound like faint scratches when I put them into a score and play them back. Is this supposed to work?

Hi Musescore!
First of all; I´m very pleased with Musescore, especially the woodwind sounds.
But what is wrong with many of the unpitched percussion sounds. Send you an example sound file with some of the corrupted sound files.

All the best

I cannot for the life of me find the file I need to place soundfonts in... When I type in the file locations they gave it doesn't exist in my macbook. I know I have to be doing something wrong because I've only had my macbook pro for about 6 months after upgrading from years of Windows OS ownership buuuuut I need some help.
I installed some soundfonts on another mac in the university maclab I use everyday but for some reason my personal macbook just isn't working out! Ah!

***** Please make a note this is a lovely forum to help others who might have troubles with their macs but I resolved my issues on my own because I learned how to operate my mac a wee bit more by accident!*******

New Handbell Soundfont

I'm interested in creating a new Soundfont for handbells. I'm not really happy with the sound from either the default soundfont or the downloadable one from the handbook. I have access to a nearly full set of bells and chimes that I could use.

I know that the common handbell symbols have been requested for version 2.0, I could make recordings of all those too (martellatto, mallets, thumb damp, etc.).

My problem is that I know nothing about audio capture or processing and don't have any equipment. Depending on the price, I'd be willing to acquire some basic recording equipment. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Is anyone already working on this? I don't want to start down a road that's already being traveled. I searched but couldn't find any topics similar to this.

to RUN the FluidR3_GM.sf2? I've got the Musescore program on a 2TB external drive, but I am assuming the C drive gets used when it runs things? Or am I wrong? Anyway, I've only got 4.1GB available on my C drive. Anybody have a clue? Thank you. :)

Beta testing required for FluidR3 mono soundfont

The exisiting version of Fluid R3 contains stereo samples hardcoded with panning information which means that proper pan control is impossible from the mixer.

I have now produced a mono version of Fluid R3 which needs putting though its paces in beta before it is fit to be added to a stable release.

The new soundfont is available for download from my Github repository here:-

Please report any issues/errors/inconsistencies in it's issue tracker entry #24019: Pan settings of Fluid R3 soundfont hardcoded

Sound Fonts

Hi,
I am new to MuseScore. I am working with the Sound Fonts TimGM6mb.sf2 and I found the only instrument to provide high quality sound is the flute. All others sound mechanical and very far from the natural instrument. Is there anything in my computer that determines the quality of the sound fonts and can be changed to improve the sounds?
Thanks,
Steve snan_1000@yahoo.com

Downloading off Internet

I'm OK with using and changing soundfonts and currently use GS 1.44. which is quite good. I tried the larger Fluid soundfont but although the middle and lower brass (brass band) were good the muted trumpet sound is poor. I've had bad experiences trying to source on the internet with spurious programs being installed without my permission. This happened earlier today and the uninstall option failed. It took two hours to erase it. Question: can anyone point me to a trustworthy site for exploring possibilities?

Lost snare drum soundfont?

Hello, I am getting back into composing after a big hiatus (5+ years). I used to have a great snare drum soundfont that was fantastic. Great sound on treble clef, and then if you dropped an octave it would do a snare roll in the same tone. Here is an mp3 I recorded years ago showcasing the snare:

Does anyone have any idea where I could find this soundfont?

Sound Fonts are evil.

I consider myself sufficiently capable in the realm of computers and technology. I can reformat my hard drive, I can find, download, and install programs, I can use a computer without a mouse using keyboard prompts. I can even type with my eyes closed.

Apparently, all this wisdom grinds to a halt with the mere whispered utterance of that unholiest of unholies.

sssooundddfontssssss

My windows just rattled and I think I heard a scream from the basement. I wouldn't be overly concerned, except that I have no basement.

I have downloaded the "Fluid" soundfont from here: http://musescore.org/en/handbook/soundfont
The bassoon makes me want to weep, and not in a good way. Now I know why it's called "Fluid".
"General User" brings me to a non working page. I found it somewhere else, and it's the same sound font that originally comes in Musescore.

I have read a ridiculous amount of tutorials that take me down the rabbit hole, because either I am a complete sound font idiot or they are not written in English.

Take for instance, this video regarding the setup of Jackrouter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h883l3PUJ50
It looks like a great tutorial, except that I can't even find an executable file to get to the starting point.

I have downloaded other SF2 file collections, but I can't get Musescore to recognize the individual SF2 files when I browse Display--->Synthesizer---->Soundfont.
I'm guessing they need to be joined into one file. I can't figure out how. Just creating a normal file obviously doesn't work.

I gave up and tried to do this:

http://bartruffle.blogspot.com/2012/08/musescore-with-garritan-instrumen...

I have the sound fonts for Garritan Personal Orchestra.
I have Aria, which continuously reminds me that my registered copy of Garritan Personal Orchestra is not registered. But it is.
I downloaded Loopbe1.
I downloaded the "jack audio server" Twice. Still can't find the setup.

And while I'm complaining about my incompetence, can anyone tell me how to check messages? I sent myself and someone else a message to see where it went, and it didn't come up in email or anywhere on Musescore.

Using Modulators

In creating soundfonts, I'm trying to make use of the modulators. No matter what editor I use, no modulators of any kind seem to have any effect as I can observe through the editors. Is there something I'm missing?

I have an instrument that simulates a modulated filter by having several samples of the same sound with different filter settings. I want to put them all into one instrument and have the modwheel cycle through all the different samples. How do I do this?

Be Careful Searching "SF2" On Free File Sharing Sites

Mostly, I download by Searching what i want in websites on which others upload their contents. It was good until i searched "SF2" at one of those websites. it featured 4 ZIP archives with at least 1.5 Gb of Size. GREAT! that's what i needed. But Once i downloaded it, IT CONTAINED 1.5 GB OF PICTURES FEATURING A MAN NAMED SAM ON VACATION. What a waste of internet to download such a thing!!! That's All. Don't trust any websites for finding sf2s. keep satisfied with what you have.

Anybody want to rate soundfont editors?

I want some sounds that aren't in the usual collections. That means I should fix it myself. Great!

Would anyone like to critique the soundfont editors?

In particular, I will want a free editor that works on Windows 8.

I didn't find any such thing on the MuseScore site. If critiques exist already, please point me to them.

Thank you for all help.
